Department of food chemistry and medical hydrology was budded off  from the department of toxicology since 2002 and began to work independently as the Department of Drug and Food Control since 2004 at the Faculty of Pharmacy in Tehran University of Medical Sciences.

Currently, there are 6 specialized labs with appropriate facilities to do applied research in the field of microbiology, microbial control of pharmaceutical/food products, pharmaceutical chemometrics, and physicochemical control of pharmaceutical products, analysis and control of foods, probiotic research and control of biological products. Also, there are two educational labs to present practical courses in the relevant fields.

This department is located in the Faculty of Pharmacy, and is an integral part of Tehran University of Medical Sciences in Tehran. Location of the department is in the Faculty of Pharmacy on the 3rd floor of the new building at Tehran University of Medical Sciences.

There are 8 full-time faculty members in educational and research fields including 2 full Professors, 5 Associate Professors, and 1 Assistant Professor. In addition, several lab technicians/research assistants, including microbiologists and analytical chemists with M.Sc. or B.Sc. degrees work in the laboratories of the department.
